What YOU are saying

Thank you to everyone who answered our survey so far about the upcoming EXpliSit series. So far, 100 percent of those who submitted the survey, said they believe the church should be preaching about sex. When asked if you would invite a friend to a sermon series about sex, about one-fifth of those who responded said they would not.

We would love to hear from more of you, so please fill in the survey at the bottom of this post if you have not done so yet. It is completely confidential. Here are some of the comments we have received so far when asked if the church should be preaching about sex:

“It’s an important issue in life and it’s important to know what God says about it not just our peers.”

“God’s Word talks about it. So the church should teach on it.”

“Because it is a good part of marriage and talked about a lot in life. We need to remember who created it and why.”

“It is a fundamental part of being human, a source of joy and grief. God talks about it, so we should also talk about it.”

“YES! God made us sexual beings and providing a God-given vision for our sexuality is so needed (single or married)! Talking about how God intended sexuality AND how God can redeem previous sinful sexual experiences is critical to helping our body find freedom.”

“Absolutely. The Bible is not silent about sex. The church should not be silent either.”

“Because God made sex. We must know what he says about it.”

“People need all the encouragement they can get to do the right thing.”

“It is a very weighted subject, emotionally. There are often feelings of guilt surrounding it from either being told it was a bad thing growing up or for things that happened outside of marriage. I also don’t know many couples in which both are happy with their sex lives or are able to communicate effectively about it.”

“Sex is part of everyone’s life whether they realize it or not. It should be talked about in an open, honest and loving way, and what better place to hear about it than in church?”

“The less we are willing to talk about a subject in church the more the enemy can count on it for the lies to have power .”

“I feel that sex is a hugely important topic. The world paints such a distorted picture of sex; the church needs to show God’s true meaning of it.”

“Because God created sex so what better place to get the information. And the info is not only coming from The Source but you are also getting TRUTH, rather than hearing lies from outside sources, MTV, other teens or in these times — pre-teens (scary!!!!).”

Starting Sunday… EXpliSit

You’ve probably unscrambled those capital letters by now in the title of our next sermon series: “EXpliSit.”

That’s right. For the next few weeks, our pastors will be taking a look at what the Bible says about sex. The messages will be straightforward. And whether you are a teen, single or married, they will touch on topics that everyone has struggled with at some point in his or her life.

Pastor Ben will kick things off on Sunday with “Satan’s Lies to Teens.” On May 15, Pastor Ronn will speak on “Satan’s Lies to Singles,” and May 22, the message is “Satan’s Lies to Couples.” And moms, we will have a special Mother’s Day message on May 8 that will look at “Satan’s Lies to Moms.” (This message is on general lies, not necessarily sex.)

But please don’t skip a message based on your marital status. During all of these sermons, we will open up God’s Word and take an honest look at what God says about some tough topics.

Before the series begins, we would like to hear from you. What do you think of this sermon series?

Will you take a minute and fill out this quick questionnaire? You don’t have to include your name or e-mail address, so your answers are totally confidential.

Oh… And don’t forget that the messages will not be watered down for younger kids who might happen to attend a service with you. We have a great place in KidsTown for our kids who are birth to grade 5. Those in Junior High and High School are welcome to serve in KidsTown on either May 15 or May 22, if that is the preference of their parents.

Coming up…

GOOD FRIDAY AND EASTER

Don’t miss our Good Friday service at 7 p.m. April 22 at Alpha Baptist Church. This service will be an awesome time to reflect on the sacrifice Christ made to bring salvation to those who believe. If you attended our Ash Wednesday service, please bring back the rocks that you received that evening. We will be using those as part of an illustration during the service.

Then, invite your friends and family to join us as we celebrate Christ’s resurrection at 10 a.m. Easter Sunday at Bolingbrook High School! Please check our web site for links to e-vites you can use to invite your friends and family members.

PARENTAL ADVISORY SUGGESTED

Beginning May 1, we will be starting a new sermon series looking at what God says about sex. We want parents to be aware of the content of this series so you will not be surprised if you have children or teens who might attend the worship service with you.

The first message in the EXpliSit series will be titled, “Satan’s lies to teens.” We would encourage students in junior high and high school to attend this service, but we also want parents to be aware they should be ready for some candid conversation afterward. The language used in the message will be straightforward and will not be watered-down for younger kids.

On May 15, the sermon will be on “Satan’s lies to singles” and on May 22, the message will be on “Satan’s lies to couples.” If parents prefer their teens are NOT in the service during these weeks, students can volunteer to serve in our KidsTown ministry. Please contact Pastor Ben Wangler to arrange a spot for them to serve.

Mother’s Day falls in the middle of the series. Because we know many people will be inviting their moms or other guests to church that day, this will be a Mother’s Day message. (The message is titled “Satan’s lies to moms,” but it won’t be about sex.) The awesome women on staff tried to convince Pastor Ronn to give all the moms a gift certificate to a spa and a bouquet of flowers, but this is the best we could do.

We hope you will invite your friends to church during this series!

JUSTICE AND COMPASSION

Mark your calendars for “Tend the Garden,” a spring clean-up day at 9 a.m. April 30. We will be cleaning up some local parks in Bolingbrook and loving our community while tending to God’s creation! We will meet at St. Francis Park behind Walgreens on Boughton Road for donuts and refreshments before heading out. Maps will be available at the Welcome Table on Sunday.
